Why doesn't Word automatically change the filename
inserted in the document footer when the file name changed?

It *will* automatically update it *if* the file name is a fieldname
*field* (not the actual file name *and* if you updated the field
(manually or when printing the print-options says to update fields
before printing).

Hi Janis,

Word doesn't update all fields throughout the document all
the time. If it didn't, you wouldn't be able to work :)

So decisions had to be made when to update which fields,
under what circumstances. You'll find more information in
this article
