Word for Mac crashes on opening

I just updated my MS Office X suite with the 10.1.5 updater, and now
Word will not open (even though its version number did not change). I
get the error message: "The application Word has unexpectedly quit"
whenever I try to use it.

Any suggestions?

There are several reasons for receiving errors starting Word. This
