Word for Mac "display" question and "find and replace" screen

When I used Word on a PC, I was able to do two things I can't do with Word for Mac (I'm sure I am able to do them, but I just don't know how yet).

1) When using the find and replace screen, I was formerly able to just use the down arrow on my keyboard to navigate inside the screen/box when the screen/box was activated. Now, I have to move the mouse over to the screen/box and use the drop-down menu to navigate through my earlier "find" terms and to reapply an earlier search term I was using. It was a lot easier to use the down arrow button on the keyboard, and was wondering if there's a way I can get that feature back on Word for Mac.

2) When using the find screen/box to navigate through hard page breaks in a large Word document, I was formerly able to see at the bottom of the Word document the current page I was on in the document. Now, when the find screen/box is activated, I can't see the page I'm on (that information isn't displayed on the Word document until the find screen/box is deactivated).

I'm not sure if I was able to explain that clearly at all, but if I did, any help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks a lot.

You explained it clearly enough :)

1) Sorry: Mac Word does not have this feature.

2) You do not have to use the Find prompt for subsequent searches. On both
PC Word and Mac Word there's a little round button at the extreme bottom
left edge of the Word window. If you hover over it it calls itself the
"Browser".

The mental giants in the Help department were too tired to put it in the
Help, but it's one of the most powerful parts of the Word interface. Thing
of it as the "Go to next" command.

If you make a search, then by clicking the arrow either side of the round
button, you go to the "next" or "Previous" item in the search. By clicking
the round button itself, you can change what kind of thing you are looking
for.

Spend a few minutes exploring it, it's very powerful.

And the Page Number remains displayed while it is in use :)

Cheers

Thanks so much! Just tried it out--exactly what I needed. Thanks again!

Using the "Browser" button:

John, I'm delighted to read your comment about lack of Help - I've
been struggling to find some information on it...

My understanding of how it works: the default 'browse by...' setting
for the Browser button is 'Browse by page', so that the double-headed
arrows effectively work the same as the 'Page up' and 'Page down'
arrows found at the bottom of Word 5.1 windows.

I would like to KEEP the 'Browse by Page'; especially as there is no
visual indication that the function of the Browser has changed, short
of clicking on the button itself. Any thoughts on how to achieve this?

Your interpretation is right on! And the function of the Browse By tool is
sensitive to what feature you've most recently used.

In Win Word the color of the arrows changes to blue if it's set to anything
other than Browse By Page, but Mac Word lacks that little nicety. However,
if you simply hover on either the up or down button a tip box pops up
indicating what feature it's currently set to use... Not a major improvement
over actually clicking the button, but it may be a bit more convenient.
There is no setting or Preference for disabling or changing the behavior.

On my keyboard, I have a "Page Down" and a "Page Up" key :)

They don't change function at all :)

In Word 2008, if you hover over the arrows, the Browse button will tell you
what it is set to.

The problem with these "discoverable" user interfaces is that nobody who has
to earn a living has TIME to be Christopher Columbus, sailing off on voyages
of discovery to a brave new world. We just want the damned thing to work,
accurately, exactly, and without adding anything we didn't ask for...
Grrrr.....

Cheers

Yeah, me too, but Browse by still snookers that just a little...

Page Up/Down will work regardless of the Browse By setting, but that only
navigates one screen of the document at a time... not a full page if you're
not at full page view. To jump from page to page you can use Cmd with those
keys if the Browse By is set at the default.

For those of us who don't have the budget for one of those fancy 90-inch
displays ;-) we loose a little functionality, though, because if Browse By
is set to one of the other options Cmd+ conforms to the arrow buttons of
Browse By rather than the page-to-page behavior.
