Word for Mac - toolbars and add words to dictionary

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

I only recently switched over from PC and am struggling with:

- Adding the toolbars to the top of the screen as opposed to the side to be able to maximise the screen space

- And adding words to the dictionary ie I use certain words for example a company name or a foreign name that is not in the dictionary. It is underline in red as a mistake but the add function is disabled

Any tips much appreciated

- Adding the toolbars to the top of the screen as opposed to the side to
be able to maximise the screen space

You can move custom toolbars anywhere you want, except between the main
toolbar and the document. You can put it above though,

- And adding words to the dictionary ie I use certain words for example

I suspect that you have a corruption in your custom dictionary.
Make sure Office is up to date, locate the dictionary in the Finder and
drag it to the icon of Word to open it there. Make a minor modification
(anything) and save.

Hopefully, it will fix the file and allow you to add new words again,

Exactly how are you searching? The filename is most likely Custom Dictionary
& should be located in: UserName/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office 2008

If it isn't there that could be the actual problem. Use Word> Preferences>
Spelling & Grammar - Dictionaries to create one.

Ok I have found the custom diary following CyberTaz suggestion. i opened it in word, made a minor modification and saved it. I close word, opened it again and opened a blank document, typed some misplet words and tried adding it to the dictionary but the Add option is still greyed out.

I have also checked software updates to ensure that my version of Word for Mac is up to date.

OK, ten I'm going to refer you here:

http://word.mvps.org/mac/SpellCheck.html

I believe you may be running into a Language conflict - where your Language
setting [Tools> Language] differs from the Language set for the Custom
Dictionary. There are other possibilities so read through the content there
for other clues.
