Word forces indents and strange characters on me!

Jim from chapel hill

(Been using word for 10+ years, sigh) I want to create an interview
style Q & A doc. I type "Q", tab, some text and apply my indent style
to it. When I hit return WORD decides to indent further and add the
letter "R" to the new line!!? (where I want to type the name of the
person being intervewed) If I re-apply my indent style, WORD
cheerfully removes the "Q" that I typed.

I have already turned off the "preference" 'tab+backspace set left
indent" but WORD refuses to let me enter the text I want in the form I
want. Please tell me one of you knows how to disable this behavior or
it's looking like WORD is unusable for this purpose. There has to be
a setting somewhere for this imperialist Microsoft list imposition.
