Word forgets Options settings

I keep on having to delete the ruler, status bar, etc every time I open Word after all
Word windows have been closd. If one is open the settings are retained. What can I do so
it remembers the settings under Tools, Options?

Since you don't mention which version of Word you have, it's difficult to point you to an
exact set of instructions. But I think you'll find what you're looking for on the
mvps.org/word website... Basically, you need to delete the DATA key for Word in the
Registry.

a charm. Now I'm not so terrifed of the Registry.

I spoke to soon. Unfortunately when I shut off my computer, it forgot all the settings
again. Suggestions?

Hi Blah,

I'm not familiar with the content of the article Suzanne pointed you to: is
it the one that tells you how to delete the DATA key? It's possible that your
installation is not retaining Registry settings correctly. I'd ask in an
office setup newsgroup, or maybe in word.setup.networking. (Be sure to
specify version of Word/Office and Windows)

If you're on a company network you may also want to check with the network
administration whether they've got a POLICY that's preventing changes to the
Registry from being saved.

Unfortunately when I shut off my computer, it forgot all the settings
