word freezes computer

Every time we try to open a word document the computer freezes and needs to
be restarted. My wife was trying to open a file she brought home from work.
The file will not open on our other computer either but the machine
continues to work. The file may have corrupted this machine somehow. I
removed the office 2000 program and reinstalled to no avail. The other
office programs work fine. OS is Win98SE What else can I try?

To add to Graham's suggestions...

Is this just the document brought home by the wife? Was the document
transported on Removable Media? Was the document SAVED tot he Rem Media
instead of being copied to the REM Media? If the answer to those questions
is yes, then the document is probably corrupt. You should ALWAYS save a
document to the local or network Hard drive and then COPY it to Rem Media.
