WORD freezes: custom dictionary too large

From time to time I get the message: The custom dictionary
is too large - try dividing it in half. WORD freezes, the
message appears again, WORD freezes again and after a few
minutes I can continue working. It seems only in
connection with certain documents.

In fact the custom dictionary is very small. Removing it
doesn't help.

What is the language of the text in those documents? What is your Word
version?

Does this haopen if background spell-checking is turned off?
Are you running any add-ins that might use the custm dictionary, or run Word
over the network rather than locally?
Are you current with Word service packs?
