Word freezes during mail merge

Word repeatedly freezes in the middle of sending a mail merge to several
email addresses.

It doesn't seem to have any pattern. It may happen after sending only 2
mails; it may happen after several dozen. I had to restart Word about 5 times
during my last mail merge to 114 people.

When this happens, Outlook also stops responding until Word is closed.

I have to close Word via the Task Manager, upon which I get the following
message:

Hi Chufflebean,

There may be an error in either your Word or Outlook installation. Have you tried repairing them (eg Word
Options|Resources|Diagnose)?

again as it sounds like the sort of problem that may be caused by a bloated
temp folder (which should always be empty when all apps are closed).
