Word freezes up

Dear Sir/Madam,

I have just installed Office XP professional and am having some problems
with Word. I downloaded the available updates from the Microsoft website.

When I am working on a file it sometimes freezes up and when I open the task
manager I see two files the same with neither responding. Sometimes it lasts
a few seconds then returns to normal, but at other times I have to wait so
long I close down word and reopen the file. The only apparent difference is
that each has a different icon. I have checked to see if I have two versions
of Word installed, but cannot seem to find two. Any ideas?
