Word freezes w/ Draw toolbar

Been using Office upgrade for OSX forever w/ no probs.
Suddenly, if I click on the Draw toolbar icon, Word freezes
and I have to force quit. No other toolbars are affected.
Any ideas?

Hi

Well, that's not good, is it?

There's nothing that I know of that causes this problem in particular. So
that leaves general trouble-shooting things to try.

Have you installed anything new just before this started to happen?
Conflicts arise occasionally.

There are lots of troubleshooting steps that you could take. Let's start
with the easiest. Find the Word toolbars preference (in your user
preferences folder). With Word NOT running, trash the preference then empty
the trash. Start Word up again and see if that fixed things.

I haven't downloaded anything recently which should affect
Office. I couldn't find a word preferences folder anywhere.
I just now re-installed the entire Office Upgrade suite and
downloaded MS's updaters. I quit everything, restarted
everything and still the draw icon causes Word to freeze
(continuous swirlling color wheel)

Hi M,

Here are the steps to follow for testing your Word preferences and Normal
Template. Hopefully one of these procedures will help:

1) Quit Word and navigate to your Normal template which should be in
/Applications/Microsoft Office X/Templates/. Rename Normal to something else
(like OldNormal), then relaunch Word. If this fixes the problem but you
have customizations, etc, in OldNormal that you want to maintain, you can
use Organizer to transfer those from OldNormal to the newly-created Normal
template. Then you can trash the old renamed file. To learn how to use
Organizer, see here:
<http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/WordMac/MacWordNormalTemplate.htm>

If this doesn't fix the problem, quit Word again, trash the new Normal and
rename OldNormal back to Normal.

2) To test your Preference files, quit *all* Office Applications.
Navigate to your ~/library/preferences/Microsoft folder. Rename the
Microsoft Component Preferences and Word Settings (10) files. When you
restart Word, these files will be recreated. If all is well, you can trash
the old files. You will have to reset some Preferences and AutoCorrect
settings.

If this doesn't help, you can trash the new files and rename the old ones
back.

Sorry, you need to follow Jim's instructions exactly. Re-installing will
not change files that are already on your hard disk, so it won't fix bad
preferences, and that's likely to be what you have.

Your Word Preferences should be in ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft, where ~
means "your user home directory".

You need to shoot Microsoft Component Preferences, and Microsoft Office
Settings (10), and Word Settings (10) -- three files.

Cheers

Thanks. Problem solved.I had initially "Trashed" the entire
folder containing Office Upgrade. When I officially
"Unistalled" the entire Office Upgrade suite, and
reinstalled everything, everything seemed to work fine.
(Office98 worked fine in Classic the whole time, so it was
obviously some spontaneous mutation with the Office
Upgrade)Who knows? Thanks for all your ideas!
