Word Freezes when opening a file

G

Gidget Kimble

I posted before about having a problem with opening certain files in Word and
have not resolved the issue yet. Here is my situation:

The operating system is Windows XP Professional. The Word is Word 2000,
2002 or 2003. Sometimes files take a really long time to open, other times
they don't.

I mapped the drives to UNC and that does not help. I have Symantec
Corporate Edition for the antivirus software. I do not have the file
"officeav.dll" on my computer so I am unable to do any of the steps suggested
in removing the Office Plug-in with Norton.

Any other suggestions??? Thank you.

For those files that take a bit of time to open, go to Tools/Templates
and Add-ins and note the Document template path.

If the document template is no longer available at the same location
then that would explain why you are seeing a delay on some files but
not others. The delay is caused by Word searching for the template and
it eventually times out and opens the document.

If there are just a few documents that exhibit this behavior then once
it opens delete the Document template path in the Templates and
Add-ins dialog box and Word will default to your Normal.dot.

Thank you for your response, Beth. I have found that in some cases, the
template indeed is incorrect as we switched servers a few years ago. I will
have to do more research on the files that are slow to open to see if this
indeed is the case in every instance. I will post my results my I have
tested enough to know if this will solve our problem.

Here's another problem going along with the original problem. Sometimes when
a file is slow to open, it will look like it's open but it's at least a
minute or two before I can do anything with the file.

Also, as an aside, it's hit or miss when the files are slow to open. One
day a file might be slow to open and then the next day or even later that
same day with a reboot the files will open fine.

There are at least 5 people here that are having the same problem.

Hi!

I have exactly the same problem. Also, the reason is the same I believe; in
the doc-file there is a link referring to an ancient dot-file which was
originally saved on server that does not exist anymore.

So guess what, it takes about 5 minutes to open the doc-file, because Word
is trying to find nonexistent server!

To fix this problem one must empty "Tools->Templates and Add-ins->Document
Template" datafield, click "OK" and then "Save". After this is done, bad link
is gone, and the file will open a.s.a.p.

I believe it is not so bad to have "Template Used" data referring to
nonexistent dot-file on ***existent*** server. This kind of situation will
slow down opening process only for 0,2-30 secs. BUT if the whole server is
gone.... waity waity waity Of course this is just my experience.

Anyway, my problem still remains: I should do this fixing procedure manually
for - I dont even know - maybe for thousands of doc-files. Whoaa! No way.
Because I'm not any programmer, I've tried to find ready to use tools that
automate the whole process. So far nothing, only two
almost-there-but-after-all-missed solutions:

1) There is a Microsoft tool called rhdtool.exe (remove hidden data tool). I
thought this could be the solution, but unfortunately it does not solve this
problem
--- if I read the specs correctly, tool removes almost every other analogous
data (Previous authors and editors, Routing slips etc etc etc) but not the
used template link
--- And even if I was misreading = tool would remove the template path, I
should use the tool through Word 2003 or from command line (Word 2003 running
on background) --> it would take n x 1000 x 5 mins to do repairing, because
all files are actually opened to Word before the tool (macro?) can work
--- One should have W2003 to run this tool - I have Word 2002.
***a-single-tear-drop-falling-down***

2) Also there is a program called Doc Scrubber (Javacool software). Program
is very promising:
--- it can fix multiple docs at the same time without opening the into Word
--> fast!
--- free for personal use
--- for business use one should purchase a license
--- BUT at the moment "business licenses are not available", perhaps because
they are "investigating offering this version of Doc Scrubber as freeware for
business use"
--- And why?
--- perhaps because this far this version didn't work as promised: "Clear
Template Used to Normal.dot" option did not do the job, plus some other bugs
reported, too... ***couple-of-tear-drops-falling-down***

3) Dont know yet...

But hey! C'est la vie!

I have exactly the same problem and have seen most of the old word files
opened in notepad and can see exactly whats going on in there. The only issue
is finding software to correct it. Has Microsoft got any tools or something
to do this with? I know Juha S has nearly tried everything, but any new
updates?

Need to know ASAP

I found that when a file opens slowly, almost 100% of the time the document
template under Tools, Templates and Add-Ins points to our old server. When I
remove this I no longer have problems opening that file.

Hope this helps!

What version of Word and operating system are you using?

A hotfix for this issue is now available for Word 2002/Windows XP
users:

If the fix doesn't resolve the issue then this thread contains some
good suggestions you can use to work around the issue:
