Word freezes when opening previously saved docs

When I use Word to open previously saved docs, the
application opens the document and freezes for up to 2
minutes. It then works fine, saves, etc., but my uses are
complaining about the wait. It opens a new doc and
immediately works. I have tried network docs, local
docs. I have ethernet and token ring. I have machines
on both that are doing it. I have wiped the hard drive
and reformatted. No help. I have unitnstalled an re-
installed. No good either. Any help would be
appreciated.
