Word freezes when typing

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)

This is the second day that I have open my word to write a paper for class and the document just stops typing and gives me the MAC colored ball. I try to force quit and restart, but the same thing happens. What can I do about this? Is there an update that I did not do?

Well, we can't tell if there is "an update that I did not do?" because you
haven't said what level you're currently updated to :). The most recent
update to Office is 12.1.2, so if you aren't yet there, then Yes, you've
missed at least one. Go to Help> Check for Updates in order to find out for
sure - and while there you might set AutoUpdate to run Automatically rather
than Manually if it isn't already set to do so.

I would also suggest that you run Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions
first. If you find that any updates do need to be applied run the utility
after each one. A restart afterward can't hurt either :)

If you continue to experience the problem post back with full details in
order to pursue it further.

Hi Bob, im having the same problem, and im defiantly running the very latest
version (12.1.2) on a fully patched Leopard OS X.

Its getting to the point where i cant trust word anymore, and have had to
revert to a text editor for authoring, only brining into word for styling.

Hi Tim -

Same problem = same solution :)

You mentioned that you're fully updated, but have you repaired permissions?

If not, that's the first place to start. If you continue to have the problem
there must be more to the issue. Have a look at the troubleshooting steps
you'll find here pertaining to "Unexpected Quit while in use";

I came here to see if others were having similar issues. I'm not sure if this is exactly the same, but similar enough that I feel I should mention it.

I'm running Leopard and Word 2004 for Mac. Both have been updated with all the available updates.

Symptom 1 - when I click file > open in Word the software totally freezes. No matter how long I wait (I'm at 4 minutes now) the system just freezes. Force quit is the only option. However, I can double click any existing word file from finder and open it without issue.

Symptom 2 - when I'm typing in Word, the keyboard quits working. I have to click another application in finder and then go back to Word to get it to work.

Symptom 3 -- symptom 2 has started also occurring in Excel. But other than that, Excel is working fine.

I'm running a student/teacher version, so I also have this installed on an iMac with a different OS. It works fine there. Just ordered the new Office for Mac because I'm so frustrated, but that will force me to switch all my Excel over to the Windows version.

I ran the repair disk permissions as suggested. It did not help even though I had quite a few permissions to repair. I appreciate any updates from others who have successfully fixed this issue!

Hi Joy -

Since all the symptoms involve OS interaction it would probably be a good
idea to go to the Apple Downloads site & get the Leopard 10.5.4 COMBO
updater. While there see if there are any other Hardware/Firmware updates
that apply to your flavor of Mac. Once you've done that make sure to Shut
Down then start the system up again -- not just a Restart.

Let's see if that makes a difference :)
