Word Freezes

Some time ago, I came across some discussion about Word freezing. Here is my
scenario:

We have upgraded our operating system to Windows XP and are using Word 2000,
Word 2002 and Word 2003. Often when opening a file, word will freeze for a
really long time. We are using Symantec Corporate Edition

In this discussion I read, it was talked about mapping drives with UNC
paths. Can you help me out with this. I do not know what UNC paths are nor
have been able to find any information on them.

Thank you for any help!

Did you have a previous version of Norton AV installed before you
installed Norton CE?

Norton AV contains an option for a macro virus scanner called the
"Office Plug-in". We've found that installing Norton CE doesn't
disable the DLL for the plug-in and if it is still registered it will
scan documents for macro viruses before opening them and that could be
causing the delay you are encountering.

Search for officeav.dll and if found go to Start/Run and run the
following command:

regsvr32 /u "c:\program files\norton antivirus\officeav.dll"

In the above example the path for "Officeav.dll" would depend on the
location of the DLL.

I did a search for "officeav.dll" and did not find it on my computer. I
searched system folders and hidden folders as well.

Also, as far as the UNC paths, does that mean do not use drive mappings but
instead use \\servername\etc? I did do that part of it but I'm still
freezing up at times.
