Word freezes

Kevin

Hello,

I've found that when I have a ~25 or more page document that has lots
of tables, when I scroll through it by dragging the scrollbar button
Word freezes / hangs up / crashes. (Actually, when I look at the Task
Manager the process's CPU usage skyrockets, and never comes back down.)
On the other hand, if I browse through the document with Page Up /
Page Down, it works fine, as does clicking on the scrollbar above or
below the button, which does the same as Page Up / Page Down. I would
guess it could be that smoothly scrolling by dragging the scrollbar
button takes a lot more processing when there are lots of tables than
when it is just normal text? Also, I read an old post that said the
freezing only occurs in Print Layout. I switched to Web Layout and
found that smooth scrolling works fine.

Any ideas for a resolution to this problem?

Thanks!
Kevin

Tables are very hard on both the printer and graphics drivers. I'd suggest
that you check that you have the latest drivers for both before doing
anything else. Also, after those crashes, clean out all the abandoned temp
files too: see the following FAQ for help with this:

Hi Terry,

Thank you for your reply, I appreciate your suggestion. I checked and
my drivers are up to date, so unfortunately that does not solve it.

Thank you,
Kevin

Hi Terry,

Thanks again for your help. I added the registry setting but found
Word still locked up when I scrolled through the document with lots of
tables.

Thanks!

Hi Terry,

I have a HP LaserJet 4000 Series PCL 5e set as my default printer, and
video is Intel Extreme Graphics driver version 6.14.10.3924. But the
documents causing the problems are created by an internal application,
and the scrolling problem is happening on every computer we've tested
in our company (and the documents are client deliverables too...)

Thank you once again for following up with me.

Neither of those drivers should cause the problem.

Are these documents company confidential or is it possible that you would be
permitted to send me one for testing?
