word freezes

Hi,

All of sudden today, Word has stopped working in this way: when I click on
"Open" (under "File"), on "Save as," on the open icon, or on
Tools>>Options>>File Locations>>Modify, Word hangs up. The hourglass is
displayed, and if I click on the document it adds a "not responding." This
is Word 2002, SP3. I *can* open files if I click on the file's icon in,
e.g., My computer, though I still cannot save such a file by clicking on
"Save as."

After reading other questions, I've tried: detect & repair; safe mode
restart; disconnecting network drives (there are "no network drives to
disconnect"). None has worked.

Thanks in advance,

Craig

Microsoft update MS015 (K**08531) is the culprit - I uninstalled it from the
add/remove section & all is well. I hope Microsoft will attend to this and
acknowledge the issue - There is a very large base of Word users out there.

Thanks very much-- This did it.

The quick but unsafe way is to uninstall the security patch that's
causing the problem. In Add/Remove Programs, check the box at the top
marked "Show updates". Select "Security Update for Windows XP
(KB908531)" and click the Remove button.

For a better workaround, until a new security patch is ready, read
Steven Hui's post at
http://groups.google.com/group/micr...&q=verclsid+hui&rnum=5&hl=en#a9fb82836c014916.
Use the registry change in Method 1. Also read the replies that follow
that post, which give some useful advice.

You can remove the offending update from Add/Remove Programs, where it shows
as "Security Update for Windows XP (KB908531)." Make sure the "Show Updates"
box at the top is ticked or you won't see hotfixes in the list.

Thanks Ron. I uninstalled the update and Word is now working perfectly. What
does this mean to the security -- any idea? (The Google site suggested with
an alternate fix of Option 1 and Option 2 was far too complex for me to
follow.)
