word freezes

When I try to print an open word document, the window
blinks (active/inactive) as though I had tried to open a
document already open. I find the application has frozen
when this happens. However it doesn't happen
consistently, seemingly less (maybe none)when I open the
application first and then use the Open command in the
File menu.
