Word freezing in notebook layout

I'm using a Powerbook G4 with Mac OS X on it and when I am in notebook
layout in Word 2004 it hangs or freezes (show that little colorful
rotating circle) a few times a day particularly when I try to stop it
from autoformatting my document in outline format. How can I fix
this?

Consistent reproducible freezing usually has one of several general fixes.

(hit refresh a few times in Safari, or use a different browser)

If you are using the MS interface, note that sometimes it lies and tells you
the message wasn't posted.
