Windows 2000 Pro, SP 4 with all security updates as of September 20, 2005.
Office 2000, SP1
Active Directory/mixed mode environment with all files being located on an
NT server.
We have been working successfully in this environment for years.
No changes have been made on either the workstation side or server side
since the last round of MS security updates were applied on September 20th.
(except Symantec enterprise antivirus updates applied daily)
Starting Monday, October 12th, several users began experiencing lockups in
Word and other weird issues in word when working within several documents.
The problem is intermittant and is not easily reproducible and happens after
different steps have been taken.
The problems happen on new documents, as well as existing documents. It is
not isolated to one machine or file, as the problem happens with multiple
users on multiple different documents.
Symptoms #1:
users creates or opens file, edits file, saves files, prints file, closes
file, Word will either error with the following:
1. Winword.exe has generated errors and will be close. (dr. watson log
created as long as users waits for the log to be created.)
2. The program you are using is not responding, please end task or cancel
This problem was able to be resolved with MSKB 252968
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;252968 by deleting
the data reg key. Although, as noted before - all systems already have
office 2000 SP1 applied. So, what caused this to start unexpectedly a week
ago with no other changes made and happening to multiple users has me
wondering "why".
Symptom #2:
User creates file or opens files, edits file, spell checks file and when
spell check gets to the footer it freezes. User goes into task manager and
it shows the program is not responding so user has to end task. User has
even waited several minutes to see if the program will unfreeze. (note: I
will try deleting the custom dic tomorrow to see if there is a corruption in
the users custom dic).
Symptom #3:
User creates or opens file, edits file, edits, edits footer, saves file,
closes file, reopens file, checks the footer and updates that were applied
prior to the save and close are not there and the old footer is.
Symptom #4:
User creats or opens file, edits file, saves file, closes file, reopens
file, and the page margins have changed. (this has also happened where
instead of page margins changing, autonumbering changes)
Symptom #5:
Same as above, user formats a file w/ 1" margins all around, saves and
prints, receives the "1 or more sections are outside the margin" when user
looks at the document, the text appears to have dissappeared in the
document. Close and reopen and the file is fine
If anyone can help me with any of these, I would greatly appreciate the
input or ideas.
