Word Freezing when accessing network file

I have a PC that is using Office 2000 and when I open Word and then try to
open a file on the network, the application freezes in the "Open" dialog box
when searching for the file. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Office to no
avail. Any suggestions?

Right-click on the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop,
left-click on Disconnect Network Drive, and disconnect any mapped
drives that are not currently available.

Thanks for the suggestion. These network drives are available. If you go to
the network drive and open the document, it works fine, but if you try to
open the same file from within Word, it freezes.

My suggestion was to determine whether ALL mapped drives were
available, and to disconnect those mapped drives that are not
available, even if the files in question are not located on an
unavailable drive.

Thanks g-n-o, I will check to be sure that all of the mapped frives are
actually available, but I don't think that is is problem.
