Word Freezing When Inserting Picture via File

Word (and actually Publisher also) will not allow me to insert a picture via
a file. It will open the 'open file' box and then freezes. I have to shut
down via ctrl/alt/del. This has been going on forever and I'm sick of it! I
need it to work.

I have windows xp professional. Just installed service pack three. Deleted
my temp folders, cleaned up my registry. I don't know what else to do. I
also deleted the data registry for word to see if that would work...it
didn't.

Could "My Documents", Desktop, etc just have too much 'stuff' in them and
the dialogue box just times out when I try to insert via a file?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Check that you don't have any broken links or mapped drives in Windows
Explorer as that is the usual cause.

That didn't work either. I've also tried disabling my Anti-Virus (McAfee)
and that didn't work. I don't have this problem with any other software -
including adobe photoshop. Thanks for helping me out with this.

Hi Ed,

What version of Word are you using?

In Tools=>Options=>File locations
is there a folder listed for 'ClipArt Pictures'? If not, does setting it to a default folder help?

Are you using detail or thumbnail view for Insert=>Picture? If you have a lot of pictures the detail view will be quicker and the
thumbnail file in Windows for that folder (thumbs.db) could be damaged.
