Word Freezing when Saving to a network Share

Version: 2004
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

Using 10.5.x, Intel and Office 2004 (Word v11.5.0).

When creating a new document, then selecting Save/Save-as and then navigating to a mounted share (have full read/write permissions) Word will lock up as soon the root share is clicked on. The only way to escape from this state is to preform a force-quit.

Well, you don't indicate what the "x" in 10.5.x actually is - which could
make a difference - but 11.5.0 is 5 updates behind the times :) It would be
best to make sure that both OS X & Office are fully updated, disk
permissions have been repaired & the Mac restarted before attempting to
pursue any symptoms.

Our users machines have 10.5.5 soon to be 10.5.7.

We are behind the times due to the fact this is a corporate environment. We do not live on the bleeding edge as a number of other institutions do. Also in the corp environment there is a far amount of red tape that needs to be cut to get upgrades through. We strive to be standard and with all of the sites around the world and 100's if not 1000's of different production work flows to iron out it takes much longer to get updates/patches released.

Disk permissions are done weekly per script on logout as well as a few other maintenance type of actions.

I did look at all the releases that we have not yet applied and the notes about them do not mention the issue we are having (mainly they mentioned opening files - as well as a few other things).

Sadly, I suspect you're going to have to live with that issue until you get
your patches applied.

Word 2004 had a bit of a history of network file issues, and I believe
patches from both Apple and Microsoft are needed to solve the issue.

You haven't identified the server OS involved, or the transport you are
using to connect to it. Both of these can have an effect on this problem.

That said, I have never been able to get any precise detail on what the
cause of the issue is, let alone how to resolve it.

Hope this helps

we are having the same issues regarding word saving from a network. We are on Mac OS X 10.5.6 and all office version are on 11.5. Our Servers are running Mac OS X server 10.5.7. We can confirm that permissions are set correctly on the server as other applications are saving correctly. Excel does not do this but often word does.

Repairing permission on client machines does not help and as the OP was saying the only thing you can get out is to force quit the word app. We have been experiencing this for almost 5 months now. The updates on the office suite does not mention any fix regarding this issue. What can we do to make our work easier?
