Word Freezing

When I click on the toolbar open file icon, Word freezes up and I have to turn off my computer and restart. I have re-intstalled Office 2008, but I still have the problem. The only ways I can open a file are 1) double click on a file itself or 2) open it from the drop down menu. Anyone else having this problem? Any suggestions for a solution?
