Word freezing

My word is either really slow or freezes when I open it.
It works fine when I add /a to winword.exe. I have tried
changing the normal.dat, moving the files in the word
startup path and deleting the data key but this hasn't
fized the problem. One thing I have noticed is that under
my processes that are running, Desk95 shoots up to 100%
CPU when I open word. If anyone has any other suggestions
it would be greatly appreciated.

What is Desk95? This sounds like a likely culprit.

this is not your problem, is it?

I have a 2.8 GHz, 7200 RPM disk, 512 MB mem machine.

If I click on a 30K doc file in explorer it takes 18 - 25 seconds to load
word 2003 and the file.

If I quit that and immediately try to load ANOTHER file, it loads and
displays in 2 or 3 seconds.

If I quit THAT one and try to load a 3rd file, it takes 18-25 seconds again.

This is curious and frustrating behavior. i don't have Norton Anti-Virus
running and have no Word add-ins.

I have completely removed and reinstalled Word 2003 twice.

All other programs load and operate normally. A 200 page PDF file loads into
Adobe Acrobat in 5 seconds or so. Word itself, when clicking the Word icon,
loads in a second or so. Inside word, the same doc files mentioned above
load in 1 or 2 seconds.
