Word generates an error message, then closes shortly after starting program

When I start Word 2000, I get the following error message
after a delay. I occurs about the time the Office
Assistant appears or would appear even though I disable
the assistant:

"WINWORD.EXE has generated errors and will be closed by
Windows. You will need to restart the program.

An error log is being created."

I tried completely uninstalling Word 2000, re-booting and
re-installing it, but this did not fix the problem.

I also tried the solutions mentioned in the following
knowledge base article:

I tried altering the registry as suggested and also
installed the 1a service update registry repair utility as
suggested. But I am still having the problem.

Any suggestions?
