Word gets the bullet (wrong)

Using Word 2002 in Office XP under WinXP Home. All updates in place.

This has been bugging me for some time. Sometimes when I click on the
"Bullet" icon in the Formatting toolbar, Word uses an absurd bullet layout
(character is "-" and bullet position is indented at 0.63 cm; text position
is indented at 1.88 cm and the tab space is also at 1.88 cm) that I have
never in my life defined or used. What's more Word installs this insanity in
the panel of 8 bullet types that you fetch up on Format > Bullets and
Numbering > Bulleted.

Where could this format be coming from? Where is it stored? And how do I get
rid of it?

There's one important piece of info about this behavior I forgot to give. I
happens if there's already a "-" at the beginning of the paragraph when I
click on the "Bullet" icon on the Formatting toolbar.

I do have a bullet format (exactly one) defined that begins with "-" but
it's nothing like the nonsense that Word opts for.
