Word goes directly to the bottom toolbar when open and will not maximize

Every time I open Word, it goes directly to the bottom
tool bar. I try to maximize and it still doesn't. I've
tried opening it from the Start menue/programs, shortcut,
& launch bar. I've also tried creating another shortcut,
doesn't work. I've tried opening my old word docs.,but
still doesn't open. What can I do? Im running XP PRo...

Open a document and then open another Windows (say Windows Explorer),
right-click in the Taskbar and chose one of the Tile options. Close Windows
Explorer and then resize the Word windows in its Restore mode. Close Word
and open it again: it should now be OK.

Is there a reason known what can start this?

A friend has the same problem on a Win98 system. A virus
scan came up empty. I suspect an inadvertent command was
somehow entered/saved in the program.

It's never happened to me, but something had pushed it off screen - it
didn't just disappear into the Taskbar as such, it was out of sight! I've no
idea why it happens.
