Word hanging at splash screen

I am working on a friend's system and I am not sure if this is
related, but we had installed a new CD-RW drive. After that, MS Word
is hanging at the splash screen. The system itself isn't frozen, I
can go do other stuff, but Word never completely starts up.

I've tried reinstalling it, but the problem is still there. Any
ideas?
