Word hangs for minutes doing first Save As or Open

After updating Word, Excel, and Windows XP to latest versions, both Word and
Excel hang "Not Responding" for several minutes the first time one does a
Save As or Open operation. After the long wait, things seem to work time. It
seems like a really long network timeout or something. All other, non-MS
applications work quickly and normally, even during this long pause. This is
a 2.26 GHz P3 with 1 GB of RAM and 200GB disk. Since it coincides with an
update, it seems like a new MS bug, er feature, to me.

Has anyone else experience this? Is there a workaround?

How do you report a problem like this to Microsoft?

Hi,
I also had this same problem. I think, some of the dll
is corrupted. I did the sfc (system file checker) and it
is working fine now.
