Word hangs on opening

Double clicking on either winword.exe or its shortcut opens a Word window
with the top header only, no menus or toolbar. CPU usage goes to 100% but
nothing else happens. Closing the Word window brings up the "This Program Not
Responding" dialog. I click "End Now" and the Word window closes.

Application Event Log shows "Fault bucket 187082843." and "Hanging
application WINWORD.EXE, version 9.0.0.8929, hang module hungapp, version
0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000." The links in the Properties dialog yield
"no information".

Same thing happens if I double click on any .doc document.

The only thing I've done before this started is install AdAware SE 1.06.

Word is part of Office 2000 Pro. All the other Office apps run OK. Running
XP SP2 with all updates.

A good start might be to rebuild the Word Data key. See

Thanks Charles and Suzanne but no joy yet.

Renamed normal.dot to normal.old. Open Word but same problem occurs. No new
normal.dot is created.

Did Start>Run>winword /a. Word opens with a dialog asking for name and
initials (already filled in), click OK, get the same dialog, click OK and now
I'm in Word. I can open .doc files and everything seems OK except all my
preference settings are gone. Closed Word and tried opening via normal
shortcut and the same problem occurs. No new normal.dot is created.

Did Run>regedit, saved backup, found
\\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Word\Data and deleted the
Data key. Tried opening via normal shortcut and the same problem occurs. No
new normal.dot is created. No new Data key is created. Opened Word via
Start>Run>winword /a and a new Data key is created but no new normal.dot.
Again tried opening via normal shortcut and the same problem occurs.

Don't know if this means anything but I also have a
\\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0 key but the only sub keys
are Common and Shortcut Bar.

I am having the exact same problem as you describe. See the thread below on
Word hanging. Your info made me remember that I had installed AdAware plus
1.06
also. I've tried almost everything recommended by the very knowledgeable
MVP that have posted. Removed Normal.dot and data key in registry. Only
AdAware install is common occurence. Will remove AdAware and retry. Will
post results.

OK, I got it fixed but I still don't know what caused the problem.

A couple of things I had forgotten to mention: the Word StartUp folder was
empty and I don't have Norton.

After trying the suggestions without sucess, I uninstalled AdAware SE 1.06.
No help.

I used System Restore to a date just prior to installing AdAware SE 1.06. No
help.

I checked the date on the last Word doc I had created and used System
Restore to a date prior to that. Bingo! Problem solved, whatever it was!
