Word Hangs on Startup

I'm using word 2002 on a laptop, and recently it hangs every time I try to
open a document. When I open the task manager, Word doesn't appear to be
running. But the squarish thing that appears before a document loads saying
"Microsoft Word" will not go away.

I tried a suggestion someone gave to delete the Normal.dot file, and it
worked. But only for the first time. If I try to open it a second time, it
hangs again, and another normal.dot file appears. Is there any way I can
solve this, without having to delete that normal.dot file every time I want
to open a document?

Thank you. I previously did everything but missed out on the NAV step. Just
my luck that it turned out to be the cause. :|
