Word hangs when I try to edit text

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel I can open documents, but when I select text to edit, try to add a return or a shift, it hangs. All I can do is force quit. It's really annoying! All the updates are up-to-date, and it worked just fine the other day.

What's going on? And how can I fix it?

Thanks!

That sounds like a corrupt document.

Try saving it as a web-page, then quit, re-open, and re-save as a Word
document.

If it hangs during the Save As, try a Maggie:

The Maggie:

1. Create a new blank document
2. Carefully select all of the text in the bad document EXCEPT the last
paragraph mark
3. Copy it.
4. Paste in the new document.
5. Save under a new file name and close all, then re-open.

This technique for de-corrupting is known as "Doing a 'Maggie'", after
Margaret Secara from the TECHWR-L mailing list, who first publicised the
technique.

Hope this helps

Thanks for your reply. I actually tried starting a whole new document, typing random text, and the same thing happened. ie. I tried selecting the text and deleting it, and the circular beach-ball of death appeared yet again. I forced quit, and sent yet another automatically generated message to Apple reporting the problem.

Funny thing is, when I came back to working a few hours later, the problem seemed to have stopped. I do vaguely remember the same thing happening with Excel a few weeks ago.

Just some little glitch I guess. I kind of hope it pops up again so someone out there can work out what it is.

Cheers!

Random Beachballs can be network instability.

If the network connection to your home drive, your preferences, or your
default printer is interrupted, you will get random beachballs...

Cheers
