Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: intel

have recently installed Office 2004 on a new macbook pro running 0S 10.5.3.

it's been working fine but today i've been working on a word document and when i tried to insert a foreign character (an é - e with an accent) it just hangs and i have to force quit.

is this a compatibility problem, or is there any way to work around it ?

thanks

It's not a compatbility problem. I insert accented letters all the
time. It looks liek a corrupted font cache issue though.
Make sure Office is up to date first (use Microsoft Auto Update), the
delete the Office font cache in ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft (the one
in your user folder).

If it doesn't correct the problem, you could try a couple of things.
First, you can launch the Font Book application, select all fonts and in
the menus, use the Resolve duplicate command. It will identify fonts
that are in more than one copy on your Mac and disable the ones you
don;t need to avoid font conflicts. If that's not enough, you can use
one of the many utilities the Web has to offer to trash the user and
system font cache (reboot immediately afterwards). I often use Onyx
(free) or Font Finagler.

wow ! thank you corentin for such a quick response, and for fixing the problem.

trashed the office font case, and ran font book resolve just in case (i don't think there were any duplicated) and now everything seems to be ok.

cheers !

.... unfortunately later in the day, after having closed and reopened word a few times, this problem has returned ...

Since clearing the cache the first time did the trick, I suspect that
something is corrupting your font cache.
I woudl definitively resolve duplicates with Font book, clear all font
cache (system, user AND Office again) and reboot. You might also
consider using a font utility (Font Doctor comes to my mind) to
determine whether one of your fonts might be corrupted.
