word hangs when looking for data

Hi

I'm trying to mailmerge using word/excel 2000; and generate labels. No
matter what I save the excel file in - txt, csv, excel5 - word hangs when
trying to access the file. I've created a test database with 5 records in.
It still hangs. Pretty desparate here.
