Word hangs when opening a file with graphics

I have just set up a new pc operating Win 2000 Pro.

I installed Office 97. I have copied all my word files off the old pc which
was running Office 97 under Win 98. I have a large number of Word docs which
have a single graphic in them (logo on letterhead). When I try to open any of
these files Word hangs. I can open any of the other word docs which don't
have the graphic without any problems. I downloaded Office 97 SR-1 and SR-2B
but the problem still exists.

I have now upgraded to Office 2000 and the problem is still there.

On further investigation, it is not just the files with the graphic in them
but a number of other file also. the files are not corrupted as I can open
them from another pc on the network which is running Word 97 / Win 2000 Pro.

Any advice would be appreciated.

OK, I've now isolated the problem but still need a solution.

The files that won't open were created using Word 6/95 templates, some of
them were saved as 95 files, more recent ones have been Word 97 files but
still created with the 95 template.

Any suggestions as to a fix?
