Word hangs when trying to insert a picture from file

Suddenly when inserting a picture into a document, Word2003 hangs-up upon
clicking the 'From file' command. Error is 'Software is not responding'.
Word, Excel, also hang when clicking the 'Save to' command but not the 'Save'
command. Have reinstalled Office2003 and all updates. Have run up to date
virus and malicious software scans and have all Windows XP updates installed.
What else can I try ? This software worked okay in the past.

Thanks for the link. Had the exat problem as mentioned below and got it
fixed as instructed on the microsoft support page.
