Word hangs while changing folders while saving

I've used Word for years. Suddenly today when I'm trying to save a file, I
do a Ctrl-S and it opens the My Documents window. I then try to change to a
subdirectory to store the file, and the program hangs. When I click on the
red X, I get a "not responding" error. When I click on "end now", it takes
me right out of Word. I tried rebooting, defragging, and reinstalling Word,
but I still get the problem. What do I do now?
