Word Has Forgotten All Toolbar Customization

Good afternoon, all.
Word has forgotten all my toolbar customizations. I've spent hours
adding the buttons I use and taking out others, as I'm sure many of you have.
This has happened to me before, on other computers.
Does anyone have any idea what could cause this? Alternately, is there
a file I can backup that stores these customizations? The KB talks about
..PIP files, which I have in both C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office and
C:\Docs & Settings\User\App Data\Microsoft Office\Office. I've tried copying
more recently modified Word.PIP files into the Program Files folder, but no
effect.
The only thing I can think of that might affect these settings is the
registry. I've been working with Outline Numbering (a nightmare in its own
right), and I know that involves the registry; something may have spilled
over.
Thank you!

That doesn't tell me how it got corrupted, but at least now I know how
to back up my customizations. Thanks, Anne!
