Word has stopped working

Hello,
Two error messages hav begun appearing on my screen.
1/ At startup the message says "AVSYNMGR...invalid page
fault in Module MCSCAN32.DLL at 0167:12014c32.

2/ When I try to start WORD an error message
says "WINWORD....invalid page fault in Module MCSCAN32.DLL
at 0167:12023196

Windows 98, Office 97
Any help appreciated

Search for MCSCAN32.DLL and look at its Properties. If there is a Version
tab, it will most likely give you some clues as to what application (or
hardware peripheral) has installed this library (or driver). You can then
reinstall as needed.

The file in question is part of McAfee Anti-virus. It may
be that mcafee is corrupt and is causing the problem and
therefore re-installing should solve. The thing is though
that it may be some other problem entirely that is
causing both programs to crash. There may be other
programs that might crash. It may be some program running
in the background that is causing the problem.
