Word has to close after pasting an image

I recently started having a problem with word. Shortly after opening a word
doc I would recieve a message "ms word has encountered an error and has to
close". This happened almost immediately if I tried to insert an image into
the document.There was no reference to the error message coding on the ms
website but I found out that if I clean out my internet explorer temp files
folder the problem would stop. My question is, as this never happened before
and I had not changed anything, why is it happening now? Is emptying the temp
file every couple of days the only solution?

I don't "save up" my temp files in the first place (Tools-->Internet
options-->Advanced, Empty temp internet files on close of broswer), but Word

I don't save up my temp files either, just using the same settings that have
been inplace for quite some time and have never had to empty it to have word
run properly. Thanks for the link, I could not find a reference for this
particular issue but I am sure it will come in handy in the future. I had
previously tried all the fixes mentioned in the troubleshooter, I am just
curious why this problem has arisen. Having to delete the temp files manually
is not difficult but I don't think it is the way it is supposed to work.
