Word Highlight and Replacement error

I used to be able to highlight a word or group of words and then just start
typing to replace that word/group. Now, after I highlight and start typing
the word/group just unhighlights and what I type gets amended to the
beginning of what I had originally highlighted. My roommate has the same
problem.
How do I go about fixing this?

Tools > Options > Edit
Check "Typing replaces selection"
