Do I need to buy anything extra or is it part of Word &

Could anyone give me directions as to how I can get spell
check in Italian and French.

Step 1 (install the dictionaries)
=======================
Install the proofing tools for Italian and French from the value pack on
your Office CD.

I guess that after this you should rerun all updaters.

If you are on Word X you should definitely repair permissions after
running the value pack or the updaters.

Step 2 (create custom dictionaries)
===========================
Open Word's preferences. Click on 'Spelling and Grammar', then click on
'dictionaries' (--> Custom Dictionaries window). Create two new
dictionaries, name them something like French Custom Dictionary and
Italian Custom Dictionary and assign the appropriate languages to them.
Close the window by clicking on OK.

Step 3 (Prepare text for the language)
=============================
To spell-check a text in Italian/French that text must be marked as
Italian/French. This can be done in several ways. The best way is to set
the language in the basic style(s) of the template you use.

For instance, in Word X, if you have style Body Text as your basic
style:
- Open a document based on the relevant template
- Choose 'Style ..." in the format menu (--> Style window)
- Select 'Body Text' in the styles list (left)
- Click on "Modify ....' (--> Modify Style window)
- Select 'Language' under Format (-->Language window)
- Select the language you want
- Close the Language window by clicking OK
- In the Modify Style window check 'Add to template'
- Close the Modify Style window by clicking OK
- Close the Style window by clicking 'Close'
- After your close the document Word will ask you wether it should
change the document template. Say 'yes' to this.

To change your default language you must change style normal of the
Normal template
