Word icon from desktop doesn't work

I copied the Word icon from the Office folder in the applications folder onto the desktop, but when I click on it, it says 'the Application Microsoft Word quit unexpectedly'. The dock icon also did that, then it started working.

You did not copy the Word icon, you copied/put the actual Word application
onto your desktop. Put it back inside the Office folder inside the
Applications folder and see if it still works. If you want to have quick and
convenient access to Word, simply drag the application into the Dock. If you
prefer accessing it through your desktop, hold down option and command while
dragging to create an alias, i.e. a shortcut that points to the application.

Thanks! I created an alias next to the icon in the applications folder, and then dragged the alias to the desktop. It works now!

It gets more complicated - this from another user.

I manage my Mac with Radmind. When I install Office 2008, everything
works fine. Updates to 12.1.1 just fine and then runs just fine. I
then upload a transcript of the changes and immediately go to reupdate
my Mac. At this point, it should tell me that no changes are needed.
Instead it tells me that a number (couple of dozen?) need to be
updated - even though I did nothing between creating the initial
transcript and the subsequent update. I then make a new transcript
with these changes, add it, and everything is then fine, as far as
Radmind is concerned. However, when I go to run Word, it bounces once
and stops. A check of the Microsoft Word CrashReport in the Console
tells me the following:

-------

OS Version: 10.4.11 (Build 8S2167)
Report Version: 4

Command: Microsoft Word
Path: /Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/Microsoft Word.app/
Contents/MacOS/Microsoft Word
Parent: WindowServer [1944]

Version: 12.1.1 (12.1.1)

If I look in the Word package, under Frameworks, I see a bunch of
aliases. Checking any of the aliases (including the one pointing to
the above MicrosoftComponentPlugin), shows that all of the aliases are
broken. I manually tried fixing them (directing them to the
corresponding files in the "Office" folder outside of the App) - still
no luck. I tried copying (not moving) the original files from the
Office folder into the App, still no luck.

Completely removing and reinstalling Office fixes the problem, but as
soon as I go to Radmind update... no luck.

I don't think it should matter, but I do have Office 2004 installed
and opted not to remove it (want to keep it around until I'm happy
with 2008.

Any advice?

Thanks, CTM
