Word "immediately" crashes when loading - 10.3.4 user

HELLO... AM I THE ONLY ONE WITH THIS PROBLEM???

Model: Power Mac G4 OS X 10.3.4

CPU Speed: 867 MHz

L2 Cache: 256 KB; L3 Cache: 1 MB

Bus speed: 133 MHz

Since my new rebuild, which was performed by our computer
techs, I was not able to load MS Word for nearly a month
without it immediately crashing. I recently got placed on a
new softWare manager program called Novadigm Radia.
Previous to this, our Dept./Div. was using one called
FileWave. Out of nearly 100 personnel in our Division on
Macs, I am the first one to experience this problem. After
troubleshooting for days, the only "temporary fix" was to
delete my Word "Carbon Registration Database" and copy over
someone elses'. Although I can now load Word without it
crashing, there has to be an explanation for why this
happened. And, I am baffled as to why our techs can't
figure this out!!! Could there be other application
components that may be in direct conflict with this carbon
thing? As lead compositor and document coordinator, I
produce major complex documents and have several Adobe apps
such as Acrobat, Illustrator, Photoshop, and Reader. I have
other apps such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.),
Norton Anti-Virus, Eudora, MeetingMaker, FileMaker Pro,
BBEdit Lite, Print Explosion, Netscape, Internet Explorer,
Safari ... to name a few. And I am using the Kensington
Expert Mouse (#k64325). Others now are experiencing the
same problem as they are being upgraded to OS X Version
10.3.4 and placed on "Radia" SoftwareManager. HELP! HELP!
HELP!WILL SOMEONE HERE OUR CRY AND PROVIDE FEEDBACK?

Frustrated and overwhelmed. Rosie

I downloaded updates last night for Office X. It took quite awhile to
download the updates and , I stupidly assumed everthing would be fine.
Then, tonight, I tried to open a document that was attached to an email and
Word unexpectedly quit before it even opened!. Now, I'm trying to figure out
where I can un install all of the updates, but, it's too confusing. I may have t
o trash every file associated with Office X and reinstall the applications.

Any suggestions?

Hi Rosie,

I'm afraid I know nothing about software manager programs, so if that is the
cause of your problem, I wouldn't know.

If a single user were having your problem, however, I would wonder about
possible font conflicts which are a known cause of Word X crashing on open.
I would advise working through the procedures outlined here:
<http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=313535>

As for uninstalling updates alone, it can't be done. You need to remove,
reinstall and re-update Office. Here's the procedure:

The Remove Office tool is located in the Value Pack folder on the Office X
CD. Install it and run it. Now reinstall Office X using the installer on
the CD or do a Drag & Drop to the Applications folder. Also don't forget to
install any Value Pack items you need. When you've finished, you'll need to
download (<http://www.microsoft.com/mac/download/>) and install the Office X
10.1.2, 10.1.4 (includes 10.1.3) and 10.1.5 updaters.

For the most trouble-free installation, run Disk Utility First Aid to repair
permissions after you remove Office, after you reinstall it and after you
install all the updates. To repair permissions go to Macintosh
HD/Applications/Utilities; open up Disk Utility; select your hard disk and
click the First Aid tab and then the button to "Repair Disk Permissions".

Note: Before doing the removal, you may want to back up some files for
later reinstallation. Consider these:

Normal Template
Your custom templates
Word Settings (10)
Settings files for the other Office apps
AutoCorrect List (called Office ACL English or whatever language)
Custom Dictionary

Um, the Carbon Registration Database is a file that's under heavy pressure
from being changed and rewritten all the time, and sometimes it corrupts
under that pressure? I'm brainstorming, but deleting the CRD is a standard
(if less frequently needed) troubleshooting measure, and other programs
(EndNote) have demanded similar fixes. It sounds like Radia may have added
more pressure to the CRD. You fixed the problem, right? Did deleting the
CRD cause any additional difficulties? (By the way, I think you can let Word
recreate it instead of copying someone else's, I think it's similar to the
preference files in that way).

So it sounds like you have figured out the problem....post back if I'm
missing something.

Thanks for the heads-up--be sure to Send Feedback (under Help) reporting
your issue and what fixed it.

Hi Rosanne:

OK, I am not sure why your Techs can't figure it out, because it is a known
problem. But it's rather obscure. Let's see if I can remember how this
works:

Your Carbon Registration Database is individual to your machine, and
contains the entries that Word needs to figure out where its components are
so that it *can* start.

The cleanest fix is to create a new User on your machine, then use the
Office CD to do a complete installation of Office X and importantly, TO THE
BOOT PARTITION OF THE LOCAL DISK.

Run each of the applications once and quit them.

Now store the Carbon Registration Database created for that user and copy it
over the top of yours.

You can then uninstall Office and from the new user and delete the account.
It should work perfectly from there.

Hope this helps
