Word in Office 2000 Professional Freezes

When I open a word file in my Word (Office 2000
professional), then close it to choose another file, the
blue band at the top flashes off and on. And the system
freezes until I cancel the task, which takes me back to
the desktop. What can I do?

this also applies to Word 2000.
