Word is flashing orange and will not respond.

Word started flashing orange and will not respond after I tried to open a
document via a shortcut. This happened before a few times before and
everytime I was able to close Word when a popup that said end program now
appeared and then reboot. I am unable to reboot now, however. An error
message keeps popping up that says I have an open dialog in Word and I need
to return to the program and close. Word will not let me do anything. It is
frozen. I try to close it from the task pane & it will not close. Any
suggestions?

Thank you both for the very quick responses. The article describes my
problem exactly, the only thing is that I do not have Norton. Instead, I run
McAfee. Do you know if there is a comparable feature in McAfee that I need
to disable?

If you had some version of Norton Antivirus installed on the computer before
you got McAfee, then the Office Plugin from Norton could still be registered
in Windows even if you have uninstalled Norton. Search for the OFFICEAV.DLL
file on the laptop (include system and hidden files/folders). If you find
it, note the folder where it is located, and use the "regsvr32 /u" method
described in KB329820 to unregister the DLL.
