Word is not closing after we use the Printto DDE command

We are use a server to "rasterize" documents and turn them
into TIFF images. We submit these to a server and we use
the Printto verb to send the file to a printer which in
turns creates the TIFF.

Most applications work fine. Word, however, will open,
print the file, but it will not close out gracefully. The
docuument closes but the application does not exit. You
have to manually log into the server and close out the
application.

Does anyone have any experience with behavior like this?
