Word is runaway application

Here's a new thing: Today, Word (Office 04, Student/Teacher edition,
latest updates installed) either won't open or it opens but won't save
a document. It gets hung up, the rainbow clock spinning around,
operates at about 99% CPU...from the activity monitor, I have to force
quit it. It won't do anything. The fan starts to run at the same time,
I'm guessing because of the high CPU but I don't know for sure.

Doesn't matter if there are other open apps or not.

I''m a writer, so unfortunately I made a deal with the devil and
installed this godforsaken program on my Macbook. I hate it, but I
need it. Any suggestions as to cause/solution?

Thanks,
Carey

I hope that somebody from Microsoft is reading our complaints and does
something about it

Consistent problems in Word usually respond to one of the standard
troubleshooting measures, which you will find listed here:

http://word.mvps.org/Mac/TroubleshootingIndex.html

Work through them one by one until something helps. If nothing does,
post back. The most common culprit is a corrupted Normal template or
damaged Preferences file. However, if you are trying to save to a
network location instead of the hard drive, look for the page on Saving
to Server on the link above.

A good diagnostic tip is to test Word in a different Mac OS X user
account and see if it works there.

Hi Carey:

Daiya has given you a comprehensive resource. I would stat by de-lousing
your fonts. Lockups at startup are usually the result of Word being unable
to rebuild its font cache.

Allow me a piece of unsolicited advice: If you sit there hating Word, it
will hate you right back :) You will get to feel really bad, and Word ...
Won't feel anything :)

Most people who "hate Word" do so because they are trying to do a very
difficult job with inadequate training. The thing closest to them is the
tool, so they hate the tool. In fact, the problem is not the tool, nor the
job, it's the inadequate training :) Often compounded by running out of
time, caused by inadequate planning, which is a direct result of inadequate
training :)

Some of us in here (me for example...) learned to make large complex
documents with a typewriter and paste pot, placing blue dots on galley
proofs and asking the printing foreman to physically move pieces of lead
around.

This gave me an intimate feel for the problems Word is trying to solve, and
thus enables me to help it along.

If you hang around in here, I promise we will give you the benefit of our
centuries of learning to make complex documents. And I promise, we will
never ask you to move a piece of lead :)

Cheers

Thanks for the info...unfortunately, I've always hated Word. Nothing
you can say will change that. ;) It won't open anything now, and what
I had tried to open was 1 page with a paragraph. I will try the
solutions mentioned here.

btw, I've been around long enough to actually know what you're talking
about...and used razor blades, film, wax machines and a typositor for
layout back in the day...;)

Hi Carey:

'S OK, you can hate Word if you like. I have always detested WordStar... I
don't know why, it actually worked quite well...

As well as your fonts, I would re-name your Normal template. If you get
corruption in that, it can lob a swadge of garbage into every new document
you create that will bring Word down when it attempts to access it.

Cheers
