Word is saving Normal.dot

I'm not sure if this is a problem or not. We are running Word 2000 9.0.6926
SP-3 on Win2KPRO.

One of my users is complaining that every time he shuts down Word, he sees
the following in the status area (bottom left corner of app window): "Word
is saving normal.dot". This wouldn't catch his eye except for that it does
take about one-two seconds.

I'm not excessively worried about it affecting his productivity or anything.
What I am wondering is what is causing this behaviour. I can't get it to
recreate on computers that have the same hardware and base install. Is this
a setting that I can switch easily? Or is it happening on my computer and
it just happens so fast that I never see it?
Any info would be much appreciated!

Thanks,
Jennifer

If this is happening *every* time he shuts down Word, then I would be
concerned, since this is not Normal. Tell him to check the box for "Prompt
to save Normal.dot" on the Save tab of Tools | Options. Then he'll get asked
if he wants to save it. If he's made changes, he can say yes, but if it's
being saved at every shutdown, then the reason is usually a dysfunctional
add-in. Often this is the Microsoft Works Suite Add-in for Word, but if you
have Word in Office rather than Works Suite, then you'll need to look for
another add-in that's modifying Normal.dot every time Word is started.

Yep, this was it. There was a file called MWWord.dot in the C:\Documents and
Settings\*username*\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP folder. I
renamed the file to .old and have not had the problem since. Thanks!!
